Jefferson County is the most populous county in the state of Kentucky. By merging with the city of Louisville’s government it is now widely referred to as “Louisville Metro” and is one of most dynamic and fastest growing metropolitan regions. Jefferson County is made up of dozens of diverse neighborhoods all with their own unique flare and style, but hometown pride and southern hospitality are common ingredients of each.

NEIGHBORHOODS
Anchorage Recognized as an historic city, Anchorage is full of charm and community. Known for its peaceful tree-lined streets, excellent school, historic estates and upscale homes, Anchorage has such a private and small-town feel you will find it hard to you’re still in Louisville.

Beechmont Located in the south end of Louisville, Beechmont is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Tree-lined Southern Parkway gives the community a relaxed atmosphere as it cuts through leading to beautiful Iroquois Park. The historic neighborhood consists of well-built older homes, including many craftsman style homes on extra-large lots.

Butchertown Just east of downtown Louisville, Butchertown is a culturally diverse community with an appreciation for art, shopping, dining, and nightlife. On tree-lined streets, the historic community’s homes feature exquisite architecture, some dating back to the early 1800s.

Downtown In the last several years Louisville has seen an uptick in the number of residential units downtown. Glenview In the 1800s, Glenview was made of a collection of magnificent country estates settled on the high bluffs overlooking the Ohio River. Highlands The Highlands is known to be one of the most popular, eccentric, and energized areas of the city. Hurstbourne Shelbyville Road and Hurstbourne Parkway serve as the main thoroughfares for the Hurstbourne community providing residents with a number of conveniences. Jeffersontown Known locally as J-Town, Jeffersontown is in the southeastern part of Jefferson County. Okolona Located 12 miles south of downtown Louisville, Okolona is in close proximity to I-265 and the airport as well as UPS, General Electric, and Ford's Assembly Plant—three of the city's largest employers. Prospect Prospect straddles the Jefferson-Oldham County line and is easily accessible from I-71 and I-265. Pleasure Ridge Park Referred to locally as PRP, Pleasure Ridge Park is located in southeastern Louisville on the outer loop with a commercial strip on busy Dixie Highway. The neighborhood offers residents the opportunity to live close to the city but still have plenty of space on quiet residential streets in moderately priced homes.

Russell Immediately west of downtown Louisville, the Russell neighborhood is in the midst of rebirth with revitalization efforts underway. Homes in the area range from large Victorian frame houses to moderately priced new construction homes.

Shawnee In West Louisville is the large, densely residential Shawnee neighborhood with the Shawnee Park at its heart. Large homes sit on shaded streets and include some of the best examples of late-19-century architecture. Housing costs are considerably lower than other areas of the city.

Shively In southwest of Jefferson County near Dixie Highway, Shively is conveniently located close to downtown Louisville and Louisville International Airport. Valley Station Valley Station is located along Dixie Highway in southwestern Jefferson County. Originally settled in the mid-nineteenth century, Valley Station slowly added modern construction as the decades passed, seeing a large-scale suburban development in the 1950s and 60s. As a result the houses today is an eclectic mix, varying in style and price, ranging from old farmhouses to more contemporary homes.

With 172 schools (89 elementary, 23 middle, 19 high, and numerous learning centers) Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) educated over 101,000 students. JCPS offers magnet, optional and advance programs that focus on special interests and needs. The school district offers Early Childhood Programs available for students ages 3 to 4 as well as Adult and Continuing Education courses that serve more than 30,000 adults annually. The JCPS website can be utilized to find a comprehensive overview of each school, apply or register to schools, and access a variety of helpful tools for parents, students, and educators.

The only other public school district in Jefferson County consists of one school within the city of Anchorage. Located in eastern Jefferson County, Anchorage School educates students kindergarten through 8th grade and offers special programs such as Gifted & Talented and Junior Achievement. Anchorage residents pay an extra tax to be included in the school district but state test scores show that Anchorage School consistently ranks at the top among Kentucky schools.

Enrollment and registration periods, as well as tuition, vary with each school, but tuition assistance programs and scholarships are available.
